The ban of R22

At one point we all have come across or heard of the environmental agency’s ban on the r2 refrigerant and
plans to face it out,haven’t we? R2,has been a target of the international community since time back then to
phase out all ozone depleting substances. R2 refrigerant under the brand name Freon has widefluly been put
to use in industrial and domestic households on air conditioning systems. Therefore we will examine the
benefits and why we still need the R22 Freon given its high r22 price per pound 2017?
1.Non-Toxic and Non-Flammable: This accounts to why R2 has been vastly used in domestic air conditions
and central conditioning systems. It has a low degree of super heat and high temperature discharge in its
systems. The refrigerant is therefore highly safe for domestic and industrial purposes.
2.Little Effect on the Ozone Layer: Compared to other refrigerants like the R11 ,R2 is less harmful to the
ozone since it contains hydrochlorofluorohydrocarbon (HCFC) which has little ozone destruction
capability. Few hydrogen atoms from it are replaced by halo carbons as it happens in
chlorofluorohydrocarbons. Halocarbons have a high detrimental effect to the environmental ozone layer.
3.Better Water Absorbing Capacity: R2 has better water absorbing capacity than other refrigerants like the
R12. During low temperatures applications,water in the refrigerant R2 will have less interference on the
refrigeration system. No water is desired in the refrigeration system.
4.Low Compressor Displacement: For a balanced compression,R2 refrigerant R2 requires less displacement
than than R12,Thus the system using R2 refrigerant produces more refrigeration capacity than the R12
refrigerant. This results to higher refrigeration efficiency and low power consumption in large scale
industries. It therefore utilizes less resources which increases production. It also comes in handy for domestic
5.Dry Charging: Most companies have discovered a way to utilize R2 in the new units. This is by producing
dry charging units whereas a technician must come to your home and charge it manually. Dry charging are
units without the refrigerant installed at the factory.
6.Topping Off: The R2 Freon requires no topping off unlike other refrigerants unless it has a leak. It is bound
to last and therefore save resources in terms of manpower and income.
7.Easy Maintenance:The R-41OA has a much higher pressure than the R-2 which is about 50°/o higher under
same temperature conditions,Technicians are thus forced to have pressure gauges,hose pipes and recovery
equipment rated to deal with such higher pressures. This really proves cumbersome as compared to dealing
with the R-2.
8.oil Recommendations: The newlyR-41OA requires use of POE oils since it will not work with the common
r-2 oils. This is because the R-2 oil is not miscible with the R-41OA and therefore will not circulate in the
system. This will cause oil accumulation at the evaporator leading to reduced performance and cooling
capacities. Less oil may be utilized which finally results to wear and tear. It is therefore important to treat oil
The discharge temperature for the R2 is relatively quite high,hence the degree of super heat in the systems
using this refrigerant should be minimum. The compression ratio for the systems using this refrigerant should
also be low to allow inter-cooling.
